The quick take

A good home printer makes ordinary tasks easy for every member of the household.

Choose for everyone who will use it

Write down the household’s main devices and tasks. Phone photo printing, a student’s laptop and scanning an occasional form are different needs. Confirm the printer supports each essential device and make the setup easy for everyone to repeat.

Make room for the whole machine

Measure beyond the closed dimensions. Paper trays may extend forward or backward, and a scanner lid needs room above. Put the printer where someone can load paper, retrieve a page and replace ink without clearing the desk each time.

Keep the shortlist small

Choose a light-use cartridge model, a photo-friendly all-in-one or a refillable tank according to your actual workload. Compare two or three suitable models for duplex, scanning and supply costs. A longer feature list is only useful when you will use those features.
