Buy the ink system for regular use
The 5101 suits a household that expects to print often enough for refill bottles to be part of a sensible ownership plan. It combines printing, copying and flatbed scanning, with a 100-sheet input tray. That is a family document role rather than an automated office station. Work out the expected monthly page count before assuming a tank printer is automatically the cheapest choice. The hardware cost, paper, refill availability and length of ownership all belong in the calculation, especially when the alternative would print only a few pages each month.
Automation is the clear tradeoff
Manual duplex and flatbed-only scanning are the boundaries to consider first. A two-sided document requires page handling, and a multipage scan means placing originals individually. Those tasks may be harmless for a family form or a single signed letter. They become noticeable when someone starts working through reports or a pile of receipts. A refillable ink supply changes how replenishment works; it does not add a document feeder or an automatic paper-turning mechanism. If those tasks are already common, compare a more automated model before committing.
Color output needs realistic expectations
HP rates ISO output at up to 12 black and 5 color pages per minute. The slower color figure is relevant to school handouts and project pages, while detailed photographs may use different quality settings altogether. Preview projects before printing and choose appropriate paper rather than expecting ink capacity alone to determine output quality. Borderless and media settings should be checked for the chosen paper size. A tank model can be a useful creative household tool without being a specialist photographic printer or a fast presentation-production device.
Check the actual stock and setup
HP's US store currently identifies the 5101 as discontinued, so distinguish a remaining-stock offer from a newly introduced model. Confirm local warranty eligibility, bottle compatibility and supported software for the devices at home. Included-ink duration claims depend on stated page assumptions and should not be read as unlimited printing for a calendar period. The 5101 remains a coherent choice for the right regular, mostly single-sided workload; automatic duplex or feeder-equipped alternatives deserve attention when time spent handling paper would offset the apparent supply savings.
