Choose it for the finished print
The P700 is most meaningful when paper surface, image scale and display intentions are part of the creative decision. Decide whether you are building a portfolio, producing exhibition work or learning fine-art printing. Those aims are more useful than a generic requirement for the best quality. If the output is mainly web previews and occasional small gifts, outsourcing a few prints may remain a better fit.
Black channels change the workflow
Epson documents separate photo and matte black channels without an ink-switching step. That is useful for a photographer alternating paper surfaces, although it does not remove the need for correct media settings. Keep a record of profile, rendering choice and paper for each finished series. Consistency comes from controlling those variables rather than expecting a specialist printer to make aesthetic decisions for you.
Budget for learning and materials
Ten inks, specialty paper and proof sheets belong in the ownership plan. Allow time to learn application settings, evaluate prints under appropriate light and distinguish a file problem from a printer problem. A large supply purchase is not evidence of a lower cost per successful image. Count the prints you keep, not only the sheets the machine manages to produce.
Our editorial recommendation
Choose the P700 when you want direct control over a recurring photographic printing practice and can maintain the surrounding process. Compare it with other pigment systems using the same files and papers where a demonstration is available. We have not measured gamut, longevity or fine-detail reproduction ourselves. Our assessment is based on its documented architecture and the responsibilities that follow from owning a specialist device.
