Start with the paper you love
The PRO-200 is a photographic purchase, so begin with the intended medium and finished presentation. A photographer making glossy family portraits may have different priorities from an artist using textured matte stock. Dye and pigment systems are different tools, not a simple ranking. Where possible, compare your own image on the paper you expect to use before making a broad judgment from a shop demonstration.
Use width intentionally
The 13-inch format can serve portfolios and framed prints, while custom length support opens other creative possibilities. Check the application, feed path and border requirements for those projects rather than assuming every unusual size is automatic. Leave room for paper before and after feeding. The physical handling of a large photograph is part of the workflow and can be awkward on a desk designed only for a laptop.
Proofing belongs in the budget
Eight inks and specialist paper need a more thoughtful budget than ordinary text pages. Make smaller proofs, keep a record of profiles and settings, and evaluate under suitable light. A repeatable process makes it easier to tell whether an unwanted color shift comes from the file, paper choice or settings. Do not treat every unsuccessful sheet as unavoidable printer behavior when the underlying workflow may be inconsistent.
Our photographic recommendation
Choose the PRO-200 for recurring photo work where its supported media and dye system match your goals. Compare the PRO-300 or another pigment device if that ink technology is an explicit requirement. Our review uses Canon’s exact-model specifications and editorial interpretation. We have not independently measured gamut, fade resistance, grayscale neutrality or per-print cost, so those characteristics should be assessed through appropriate prints and evidence.
